20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of those classics that has made such an imprint upon SF and popular culture that one needn't have read the book to know its features:.... the dark genius, Captain Nemo; the futuristic Nautilus submarine with its many strange inventions and capabilities; and gigantic octopi that can drag a ship down to the abyss. In fact, this book is so invested into modern culture that hardly anyone nowadays has read it, and it is a work that, even more than 120 years after its first publication, still deserves examination. This revisitation is warranted because Jules Verne was so profoundly insightful regarding future technologies and humanity's interaction with it. Although recognizable submarines had been lurking around since the 18th century, it was Verne who conceived of this invention on a massive scale.
